The Overview
Multitude Insights is a startup company focusing on improving the work flow and communication of law enforcement.
The Problem
Multitude Insights wanted a UX-focused redesign of their beta product, BLTN. Gamification, “stickiness”, and overall improved user satisfaction are the focus for BLTN.
The Solution
Adding new features, categories, and an updated sitemap showed improved satisfaction and usability for detectives and law enforcement officers.

Where Do I Start?
Let’s take a look at the original product! Below are screenshots of the pages and features of BLTN.
Let’s Compare
This may look scary but it helped show what industry standard is. A challenge with this particular project is that there aren’t many available platforms that have a similar purpose as BLTN. Overall, BLTN lacked features compared to other similar products. With this information, these were important to focus on:
- Geographical features (to improve information comprehension)
- Improved collaboration feature (to improve success rate of solved cases via connections)
What to do now!
To understand the user, it was determined the best method was to talk to the user! To do this, a survey was given to agents and officers via social media groups and contacts. Based on survey responses, phone calls and zoom conferences helped give a deeper understanding to the problem.
Hours (daily) spent on paperwork:
Preferred mode of communication:
Preferred way to receive information:
I noticed…
Users value information centralization and consistency.
Users are frustrated by convoluted and outdated databases, and prefer social media interfaces.
Users have to prioritize based on limitations - time, personnel, information, technology, etc.
Users collaborate with other departments/agencies/jurisdictions regularly.
Meet Pete
Pete is a detective with the Sandwich Police Department. He gets frustrated by the amount of irrelevant information on the screen in front of him and feels that useful information slips through the cracks. He finds networking with surrounding departments to be the best and most efficient way to solve cases, but sometimes it’s not easy to get – and stay – in touch.
Needs and Goals
He needs a clean interface to read information easier
He needs to know the best way to get in contact with the right people in other police departments.
He wants the ability to filter what is displayed on his screen
He wants to be able to track progress on a case.
Pain Points
There’s too many places to check for and post information.
Current system of communication is cumbersome and often unreliable.
Spelling errors make finding relevant information difficult.
Dislikes learning complicated new interfaces.
Behaviors
Semi tech savvy
Uses Instagram and Facebook in his free time
Spends too much time on paperwork
Prefers having information displayed visually
Going with the flow
Keeping the flow simple to reduce learnability difficulty was vital based on survey feedback. This new flow shows the progression of entering BLTN to interacting with others.
